Using Expressions

Expressions let you inject the value of a specified attribute as contents of another attribute.

Entering an Expression

Before you can enter an expression, you must switch the input type of the desired field to type "Expression."

To enter an expression:

  1. Right-click on a label or input field.

  2. Select Expression from the context menu.

The input type for the field is set to Expression. An "Open dialog to enter an expression" placeholder is shown in the field.

  3. Hover the cursor over the field.

To the right side, an "Edit expression" button is shown.

  4. Click the Edit expression button.

The Edit Expression - <field name> dialog box opens.

  5. Enter or paste an expression in the field.

You can test the entered expression in the Rules Simulator, or formulate and test an expression in the Rules Simulator and then paste it to the Edit Expression dialog box.

    1. Click the Open Simulator button.

The Rules Simulator opens. If an expression was entered in the Edit Expression dialog box, it is inserted in the Rules Simulator's Expression Simulator pane.

    2. Enter and evaluate, or directly evaluate the expression in the Rules Simulator.

    3. Minimize the Simulator or resize the Simulator window so that the Edit Expression dialog box is not hidden.

    4. In the Edit Expression dialog box, click the Paste from Simulator button.

The evaluated expression is inserted into the Edit Expression dialog box.

For more information, see Evaluating an Expression.

  6. Click OK.

The Edit Expression dialog box is closed. The expression is shown in the field. If the expression text is too long, its display is cut and ends in an ellipsis. Hover the cursor over the field to show the entire expression in a tool-tip.

  7. To remove an expression:

    1. Hover the cursor over the field and click the Edit expression button.

    2. In the Edit Expression dialog box, delete the expression text and click OK.
